My virtual reality…a virtuality, if you will

About

Purpose: First, to document my experiences in the universe of Information Technology at my job and in my personal life, for good and for bad, in hopes of helping others learn from my mistakes and myself from repeating them. Second, to provide information about FREE (and often times better) versions of proprietary ($$$) software. This is likely to evolve and grow as time goes on, which it will.

Description: I work in the IT field at a school as an IT assistant. That is, I assist the IT manager. I’ve been there since September 2007 and in my first month alone I have gathered quite a few interesting stories (I’ll change the names so not to embarrass anyone).

Personal: I have been acquainted with computers for about 15 years. From the first Saturday that it took me and my dad about 11 hours to put together our first computer circa 1992, to a few years later programming in Q-Basic for kids on DOS, to spending my entire 7th grade summer vacation learning HTML, to going to college for 2 years as a CIS major, to now finally working “with computers”, it’s been quite a journey. Of course, I realize the road ahead is still much longer than the one behind.

Operating System(s): In order of what I prefer and will be using someday soon, Ubuntu Studio, Mac OSX 10.5 “Leopard”, Fedora Core, Knoppix, Mac OSX 10.4 “Tiger”, all other distributions of Linux including “DSL”, Windows XP. You might notice Windows Vista missing from this list, which is because I do not have or ever intend to use anything past XP, although I’m sure I will be pretty soon (at least at work).

* Disclaimer: This site is meant for educational purposes, but you should not depend on it as your only resource. If you are looking into doing one of things I describe on this site, do more research first. The saying, “Measure twice; cut once” applies whenever you are trying something new on your computer. The more you know ahead of time, the more prepared you will be when something goes wrong. Also, the less likely you will be to really get yourself in trouble. By following my suggestions and directions, I in no way take responsibility for the outcome of your actions. Anything you do to your own property is your own responsibility. I will offer my best advice if you run into any problems, but I do not guarantee a successful outcome. I have learned the hard way a few times when trying to improve or make changes to my own system, so I understand how frustrating it can be. So I will reiterate, read more than you think you need to know. Even better, find someone who has already done it and have them walk you through the first time until you are comfortable on your own. Computer guys like to show off what they can do, even if they act like it’s annoying that you don’t know what you are doing.
